Object Name Handbill
Scope & Content This is a program for the production of "Way Down East" at the Moulton Opera House in Laconia on September 22 in the early 1900s.

On the cover is printed "Way Down East Encyclopedia. Wm. A. Brady's production of Way Down East in association with Jos. R. Grismer, compliments of Wm. A. Brady and Jos. R. Grismer". Also printed on the front is a picture of a man in a rocking chair in front of a fireplace, wearing a suit and smoking a pipe. There is a woman on his right standing, dressed in a long dress and apron. In the background of the picture is a window with curtains. The fireplace sits on the far right and has a mantel above with a vase and a clock on it. There is a rug on the floor. Inside the program are: an index of the contents which includes the following items: a clergyman's opinion of the play, distances via rail from Chicago, a piece on visiting New York City and the distances involved with doing so, the population of cities for 1900, the United States 1900 population and square miles and members, the changes for population, United States Postal Laws, "Way Down East in Chicago", United States Patent and Copyright fees, Colonial History, Battles in America, a picture of "The Absent-Minded Professor Wondering Where He Put "Kate's" Bonnet", how armies march, Civil War, The Ancient Hour, Executive Mansion Rules, Spanish-America War, domestic weights and measures, meteorites, help in case of accidents, British weights and measures, capacity of boxes, minimum weights of produce freezing/fusing/boiling points of substances, table of digestion, flight of birds, pulpit praise, help in case of drowning, proper use of capital letters, punctuation marks, a picture " The Squire Ordering Anna Out of the House", rules of spelling, large telescopes, in case of fire, greatest altitude in states, depth of the ocean, a description of the play and praise for the play. On the back cover is printed : " Wm. A. Brady's production of Way Down East, Lottie Blair Parker elaborated by Joseph R. Grismer, Moulton Op. House, Laconia, N.H. , one night only, Tuesday, Sept. 22". Also on the back is a sketch of a man carrying a women in the snnow with a log cabin depicted on the far right and a trees on the far left. In total there is a front and back cover to the program and 32 pages inside.
