Scope & Content This color print depicts a Victorian family gathered in a parlor around an Aiken's Family Knitting machine.

The room has yellowed walls and vegetative patterned oil cloth or linoleum-covered floor. There is a large cabinet at the left with glass doors and a bust on top of man. To the right of center is a fireplace with two soldier figurines in neo-classical style on either side and a glass-domed neo-classical clock (11:45) with figure leaning over face at center. A landscape painting with gold frame hangs at the right. In the room are two men, three women, and four children. A man sits at the left in a dining room chair with his back to the viewer. He wears a dark jacket with tail, white trousers, and full beard.
At the center a group is gathered around a table, onto which is set an Aiken's Family Knitting Machine. A woman is seated in a chair, operating the machine. She wears pink bodice and mustard colored skirts. She works with the spools of white yarn to create a hosiery tube that hangs below the machine and entices a black cat. A man stands behind the table with a moustache and large mutton chops. He wears a suit with bow tie. Two boys stand at the opposite side of the table. Both wear suits. The boy in the foreground wears a golden waistcoat and holds a stocking up in his left hand.
At the right an elderly woman sits in a red upholstered chair with fringed seat and arms. She wears eyeglasses, a white head covering, and a dark dress with white bertha. A younger woman in a blue dress and white apron sits at the right with a toddler in her lap.
In the center foreground a young girl wearing a red dress reaches for the black cat and there are two kittens in the foreground (one black and one white and black) playing with a ball of twine.
